Paweł Buczyński (1953 - 2015)

Composer and music tutor, b. 7th April 1953 in Laski. He studied composition with Tadeusz Baird in the State Higher Music School in Warsaw (1974-79) and later, thanks to an Austrian government scholarship, in Hochschule für Musik in Vienna under Roman Haubenstock-Ramati (1983-84). He also participated in International Summer Courses of New Music (1980, 1982, 1984) and the International Young Composers’ Workshop in Borowec (Bulgaria, 1982).

Since 1979, he has been on the faculty of Warsaw’s Music Academy (serving also as deputy dean of the Department of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory
in 1983-86). In the 1980s and 1990s, he held various functions in the Managing Board and the Warsaw Board of the Polish Composers’ Union. In 1990-94, he taught in the State Higher School of Theatre Studies in Warsaw.

Paweł Buczyński has won a number of composer competitions, incl. the Youth Forum in Cracow, 1977 (1st prize for String Quartet No. 1 written in 1976), the Young Composers’ Competition
of the Polish Composers’ Union
, 1980 (1st prize for The Music of Falling Leaves for string orchestra, a work from 1980) and a recommendation of the International Rostrum for Composers in Paris, 1985 (for the same piece).
