Composer, conductor and music life organiser; born in 1930 in Sadlno.
In 1949-51 he studied musicology with Adolf Chybiński in Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań; in 1950-54 – composition with Tadeusz Szeligowski and in 1951-55 conducting with Walerian Bierdiajew and Stanisław Wisłocki in the State Higher School of Music in Poznań.
In 1954-64 he was a conductor in Poznań Opera, also working with many symphony orchestras, particularly with Poznań Philharmonic. Later he worked in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw and the Grand and Musical Theatres in Łódź.
In 1970-73 he was artistic director of “Polskie Nagrania” record company; 1973-1985 he held the function of Secretary General in the Polish Composers’ Union (PCU), and 1985-2001 – President of PCU Warsaw Branch. In 1986, he founded the festival Warsaw Music Encounters, of which he is artistic director.
For his works and organising activity, Władysław Słowiński received numerous awards and distinctions, e.g.: in 1975 – Golden Cross of Merit, in 1977 – Prime Minister’s Award for works for children and young people, in 1980 – Cavalier’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order, in 1986 – The Golden Honorary “Badge of Merit to Warsaw”, in 1987 – Officer’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order; in 1990 – Award of the Warsaw Voivode for his entire musical oeuvre, in 1999 – the annual Award of the Polish Composers’ Union for compositions, the organisation of the Warsaw Music Encounters festival and contributions to PCU’s work, in 2001 – Award of the Marshal of the Mazovian Voivodship for compositions and social activity, in 2005 – Commander’s Cross of the Order of Poland’s Rebirth, in 2006 – Silver Medal Gloria Artis – Merit to the Culture and the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Award of the Self-Government of the Mazovian Voivodship in the field of music.
