August Freyer

Karol August Freyer was born on December 15, 1803 in Munda near Dresden, died on May 28, 1883 in Pilica near Grójec. German organist, composer and teacher. He was a student of Friedrich Schneider and Ch. Pohlenz in Dresden and (from 1828) of Józef Elsner in Warsaw, where he settled forever. In 1837 he became the organist of the Evangelical Church (he remained in this position until 1879). He toured in Poland, Germany and France, gaining fame as one of the best virtuosos of his time. In the years 1861-66 he taught organ playing and harmony at the Music Institute in Warsaw; he was a co-founder (1871) of the Warsaw Music Society. One of his students was Stanisław Moniuszko. He composed organ, vocal and vocal-instrumental pieces, and published the Practical School for Organ (1861).
